Frequently Asked Questions

Vocus Fast Fibre delivers a dedicated fibre connection that isn’t shared with other users unlike some business nbn® products (“Internet grade” Traffic Class 4 Ethernet) which mostly runs on a contended network and in some cases on less reliable access technology such as copper. This means Vocus Fast Fibre delivers symmetric upload and download speeds, higher uptime, and less variability in performance during busy periods backed by strong SLAs. It's purpose-built for business and enterprise operations.

For businesses that prefer or are in locations where there is no Vocus direct fibre, Vocus offers both nbn® Enterprise Ethernet plans and business nbn® plans with 121 nbn® Points of Interconnect to Vocus high-performance fibre network as an alternate access point.

You are free to bring your own modem/router if you like, or add our compatible business-grade modem/router when ordering Fast Fibre online. Available options will be displayed based on the plan speed you've selected. Your modem/router will be shipped before your service is activated so you're ready to connect once installation is complete.

Yes. Customers can upgrade to a higher speed plan at any time during their contract term. Upgrading to a higher speed plan does not affect or restart the existing contract term unless otherwise specified in the customer's agreement. A $100 Link modification charge applies for service modification orders apply, and depending on the speed you are upgrading to, it may require a technician appointment.

Yes, you’re welcome to use your own compatible router with any Vocus Fast Fibre plan. To ensure a smooth setup and reliable performance, your modem should meet our recommended technical specifications.

We suggest using a modem that supports the relevant technology type for your service, has up to date firmware, and is configured to work with standard Vocus network settings.

You may need to confer with your Network or IT manager if you have specific functional or performance requirements on your own hardware.

Core compatibility

  • Supports the Vocus access technology at your premises

Network and configuration

  • Supports standard network configurations, including DHCP and IPoE connections
  • Allows manual network configuration if required
  • Has up‑to‑date firmware installed

Wi‑Fi and performance

  • Dual‑band Wi‑Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)
  • Wi‑Fi 5 (802.11ac) or newer recommended for business environments
  • Suitable capacity to support multiple connected devices

General requirements

  • Purchased unlocked from a retailer (not locked to another service provider)
  • Factory reset prior to installation

If you plan to use advanced features such as VPNs, IPsec tunnels, content filtering, or other security services, ensure your router has sufficient processing capacity to support your selected internet speed. Some routers may not achieve full line speed when these features are enabled.

If you're unsure whether your equipment is suitable, please speak with your IT administrator or contact our team.

While Vocus provides support for the internet service itself, we may be unable to assist with configuration or performance issues related to third‑party modem hardware. For a fully-managed experience, you can choose to add a business‑ready router with your plan.

Fast Fibre includes business-grade service levels backed by the Vocus network for 99.95% availability, including 24/7 support and a 4-hour restoration SLA.

Fast Fibre is a dedicated fibre service delivered over the Vocus fibre network. The installation fee contributes towards connecting your premises, provisioning your service and completing any network or site works required to activate your connection.

Customers who choose a 36-month or 48-month contract will receive $0 standard installation.

Installation requirements can vary depending on your location and the existing network infrastructure available at your site.

For locations already connected to the Vocus fibre network (On-Net), installation is typically completed within 35 business days.

If additional network extension work is required (Near-Net or Off-Net), installation timeframes may vary depending on the availability of network infrastructure and site requirements.

Eligible Fast Fibre On-Net plans include a rebate of up to $1,000 (ex GST), depending on the speed and contract length selected. The rebate is not deducted at checkout and is instead applied as a credit across multiple future invoices after your service is connected. To receive the full rebate, the service must remain active and meet the offer eligibility criteria.

Customers can choose to pair a managed router with their service, where the modem/router is supplied by Vocus and managed by Vocus. We will configure the router according to a base level configuration, or can assist in making changes when you require them.

By Default, the managed router will be configured as follows:

  • WAN Static IP Configured (1 Usable IP Address which will confirmed during the delivery phase)
  • Firewall enabled
  • Network Address Translation
  • Local Area Network Addressing: 192.168.0.X
  • Wifi LAN: Disabled by default

More advanced setups can be configured, and if you have an advanced setup requirement, we encourage you to call us to discuss with one of our specialists, or select “Additional Setup” in the checkout process and we’ll contact you to discuss your setup.

A Network Termination Unit (NTU) is the device installed at your premises that connects to the Vocus fibre network.

The NTU provides a wires-only Ethernet handoff, allowing you to connect your own router, firewall, switch, or other networking equipment to your service.

Depending on the service speed ordered, the NTU may provide:

  • RJ45 Ethernet (1000BASE-T) for services up to 1 Gbps
  • 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-LR SFP+) for services up to 10 Gbps

NTU Capacity

NTUs for services up to 1 Gbps

  • Support up to four services
  • Maximum aggregate throughput of 1Gbps, or the maximum service speed ordered

NTUs for services between 2 Gbps and 10 Gbps

  • Support multiple services
  • Maximum aggregate throughput of 10Gbps, or the maximum service speed ordered

Yes. One of the key benefits of the Vocus NTU is that it can support multiple Vocus services simultaneously over a single fibre connection.

Available services include:

IP Line

Business-grade internet connectivity suitable for most organisations, particularly small and medium-sized businesses.

IP-VPN

Connect multiple business locations through a secure private network using FAST Fibre or other compatible access technologies.

E-Line

A dedicated point-to-point Ethernet service connecting two sites directly.

E-LAN

A point-to-multipoint Ethernet service that connects multiple sites into a single private network.

PartnerLink

A private connection to supported cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. PartnerLink bypasses the public internet, providing a more direct path to cloud resources and can be beneficial for data transfer, application performance, and latency-sensitive workloads.

SIP Voice

Business voice services delivered over the data connection. Additional telephony equipment may be required.

Example Service Configuration

A 1Gbps FAST Fibre connection could be divided between multiple services, such as:

  • 500Mbps IP Line (Internet)
  • 200Mbps IP-VPN connection to a head office
  • 100Mbps PartnerLink connection to AWS or Azure
  • 100-channel SIP Voice service

This allows a single fibre service to support multiple business applications simultaneously.

Note: Additional charges apply for each service. Some solutions may also require additional equipment or associated services.
